Academic Advisement

In This Section

We are here to support our students' academic success. Therefore, every student at Rutgers University–Newark is assigned an academic advisor in their college upon enrollment.

A student's academic support network begins with their academic advisor who help their students stay on top of their academics, get helpful academic advice and remain on a smooth path to graduation.

What is Academic Advisement?

Academic Advising is an opportunity to exchange information designed to help students reach their educational and career goals. Academic advisors can assist in this process by helping the student understand options, determine resources and, when necessary, identify alternatives.

Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the student to make decisions about their life goals by creating a plan to reach those goals. While students are urged to keep parents informed of plans and progress, the advising relationship uniquely is between the academic advisor and the student.

What are some roles of academic advisors?

Academic advisors can assist students with:

  • Advice on course registration, core curriculum, majors, and/or minors
  • Discuss academic progress
  • Planning a reasonable graduation date
  • Review any questions about academic policy and processes

How can students make an appointment with their academic advisors?

  • Advisors from your student's minor academic program
  • Advisors from specialized programs:  For example, students who participate in programs like the Educational Opportunity Fund, the Honors Living Learning Community, or the Honors College, will have access to advisors in those programs.
