The Garden State – Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (GS-LSAMP) serves as a learning community to increase the retention, graduation and success among traditionally underrepresented minority students by expanding opportunities in STEM.

Program Description

The GS-LSAMP (Garden State - Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation) program aims at providing participating students with opportunities and resources in an effort to ensure student success in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) majors, as well as holistic educational experiences to effectively explore and succeed in STEM majors and careers.

Rutgers University-Newark is the proud leader of a 7 college, statewide alliance program to enhance the success of students in STEM fields. The program extends well beyond the confines of Rutgers and is recognized nationally for its success in adding diversity to the STEM fields, as well as helping students graduate and continue into rewarding careers!

Emmanuel Barchue, Class of 2019

When I first started Rutgers - Newark, I had no idea that I would be pursuing a career in STEM education. As a matter of fact, it wasn’t until I was honored with a math tutoring position with GS - LSAMP at East Side High School that I made a commitment to pursue a career in teaching mathematics. I believe that the meaning of life is to find your gift and the purpose is to give it away. LSAMP helped me find my gift and now I believe it is my purpose to help others find their gifts through STEM education. I want to empower students through mathematics. I used to mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters at University Heights Charter School and I also volunteered with NJ PIRG. I now work with Rutgers Future Scholar as a math tutor for middle and high school students and I also tutor some of my friends here at Rutgers - Newark. I am a part of the Urban Teachers Education Program and a part of the LSAMP Student Club. All of these opportunities were made possible for me through my participation in LSAMP. I plan on pursuing my Masters in Special Education and Mathematics, and I am very hopeful towards my future as an Urban educator. I graduate with the class of 2019.
