Deck 1, located on 200 University Avenue, will be reopen on Wednesday, September 7, 2022.

Overview

Updated August 19, 2022:

Deck 1 structural renovations are near completion. Deck 1 is scheduled to reopen on or before Tuesday, September 6, 2022. All structural repairs will be complete except for the Warren Place pedestrian access, located at the Southeast corridor of the garage (across from the Golden Dome).

The work on the Southeast corridor of the garage (across from the Golden Dome) will continue through fall 2022 semester. The stairwell adjacent to Warren Place pedestrian access will be accessible to foot traffic. Students using this stairwell must follow the safe walking path to exit and enter the University Avenue side of Deck 1. The above image provides a rendering that shows how the Southeast corridor of Deck 1 will appear upon completion. Major aesthetic improvements will be ongoing in Deck 1 through the fall semester.

Deck 1, when open, will be accessible to Newark Premium Commuter, Campus Resident and Off-Campus Living permit holders during aesthetic improvements. Students with Premium Commuter, Resident, and Off-Campus Living permits will be able to park in Deck 2 and Deck 3 both are located on Washington Street between Raymond Blvd and Warren St.

Enhancements to Deck 1 include::

  • Fresh paint
  • New LED lights
  • Re-striping and surface repair
  • Speed bumps for safety
  • New interior and exterior wayfinding signage
  • New ADA compliant entrance/exit on Warren Place 
  • Rutgers Raiders parking area
  • Interior elevator upgrades
  • New security cameras including license plate recognition

When can I purchase a student parking permit for Fall 2022?

Student permits are available and can be purchased from your Rutgers Parking Portal account. An announcement was sent out to all students on Tuesday, August 16, 2022. Visit https://go.rutgers.edu/parking and log in with your NetID and password to access your account.

Where can I park if I have ADA accommodations and use Deck 1 for parking?

Will I be receiving a refund for purchasing a premium pass and being advised there is less parking now with closing of Deck 1?

Premium parking permits wil be able to find available parking in either Deck 2 (166 Washington Street) or Deck 3 (180 Washington St. - between Raymond Blvd and Warren Street). Information on the opening of parking Deck 1will be sent the community in early fall 2022.

Beyond the economic lots that are not close to campus, will there be other options for parking in nearby non-Rutgers lots?

The Economy permit allows parking in New St. Lot (272 New Street - between Lock Street and Wilsey Street) as well as Norfolk Deck (P1) (255 Norfolk Street), after 3:30 pm students with Economy commuter permits may park in Essex Lot 506 (Essex Street - Behind 1WP building), Deck 2 (166 Washington Street) or Eagle East Lot 509A (Corner of [East Side] Eagle Street and Orange Street -closest lot to the business school).

We do not provide off campus parking providers recommendations.

Will there be a shuttle stop at the economy lots? If so, where can I find that updated schedule?

The campus bus schedule is available online https://ipo.rutgers.edu/dots/buses-newark and can be tracked by downloading the Transloc app for iPhone and android phones free from the iTunes or google play store, for additional Rutgers mobile apps please visit  oss.rutgers.edu/mobile ​   The two economy lots are the New St. Lot (272 New Street - between Lock Street and Wilsey Street) and the Norfolk Deck (P1) (255 Norfolk Street).  The New St. Lot is a walking lot which is approx. 3 blocks from campus.  The Norfolk Deck (P1) has direct bus service from the Medical School using the Campus Connect and 180 West Market Street Stop using the Penn Station Local. Both stops are right next to the Norfolk lot with direct service to the campus and detailed bus information can be found in the link above.

Yes. You will be able to find available parking in either Deck 2 (166 Washington Street) or Deck 3 (180 Washington St. - between Raymond Blvd and Warren Street).

Will there be security in the New Street/Lock Street lot?

No. While there is not a dedicated security assigned to the parking lot, the area surrounding the New Street lot is patroled by four police units: Essex County, RUPD, NJIT and City of Newark. If you are feeling unsafe, you can call RUPD at (973) 972-4491 or (973) 353-5111
