RUN Rising Program

Rutgers University-Newark, a proud anchor institution in the City of Newark, is committed to helping students achieve their first undergraduate degree. The RU-N Rising program is specifically designed for students who have earned at least 60 credits at Rutgers University-Newark but have paused their studies and carry an outstanding balance from prior semesters. RU-N Rising offers the support needed to clear these balances and re-enroll, making it possible for students to register for upcoming courses. Through this program, students receive direct guidance to make steady progress toward graduation.

RU-N Rising Program Eligibility:

  • Have been admitted and matriculated into a Rutgers University–Newark undergraduate degree-seeking program and then had to take a break 
  • Have a break in enrollment at Rutgers-Newark for one (1) or more consecutive fall and spring semesters
  • Have earned sixty (60) credits or more at Rutgers University–Newark towards your first bachelor’s degree
  • Have an earned Rutgers University–Newark GPA of 2.0 or better
  • Have an outstanding balance from prior semesters due to the university before having to stop out of $100 to $2,500
  • Be a current resident of New Jersey

Completing and submitting the application:

  • The RUN Rising online application must be completed and submitted by December 10, 2024, at 11:59 PM. All RU-N Rising online applications will be reviewed to ensure that applicants meet the criteria for the program as outlined above.
  • Every submitted application will be reviewed on a first submission basis until funds are fully exhausted or the posted deadline date has passed. 
  • The FAFSA (school code 002629) or NJ Alternative Financial Aid Application must be completed and submitted 

How to access the RU-N Rising application

To access the RU-N Rising Application, follow the steps below:

  1. Visit the Rutgers-Newark Forms Portal 
  2. Click on the "RU-N Rising Application" under My Money 
  3. Log in using your Rutgers University netID & password. If Rutgers netID does not work, please set up an account using your current email.
  4. Successful candidates will be informed in writing at the email address provided in the application. The candidate must meet with their academic advisor to complete their graduation plan prior to the release of the RCG funds.  

Overview of the RU-N Rising program:

  • Before the start of Spring 2025, meet with an academic advisor to create an academic plan that will help you understand what courses need to be completed to earn your undergraduate degree
  • Meet with an academic advisor before each Fall and Spring semester to review and update your academic plan in anticipation of registration for the next semester
  • Enroll  for a minimum of 3 credits for each Fall and Spring semester until the undergraduate degree is earned
  • Attend the in-person RU-N Rising Orientation (specific details will be emailed to approved candidates)
  • Attend monthly RU-N Rising Cohort meetings until the degree is earned
  • Meet with a Financial Aid counselor in the Spring of each academic year to review packaging and create a financial plan through the earning of your undergraduate degree

Eligibility to continue each year in the RU-N Rising program:

  • Maintain a GPA of 2.0 (SASN, SCJ, SPAA) or 2.5 (RBS) or above  
  • Enroll for a minimum of 3 credits each Fall and Spring semester until the undergraduate degree is earned
  • Meet with an academic advisor each Fall and Spring semester to review and update academic plan in anticipation of registration for the next semester
  • Attend monthly RU-N Rising Cohort meetings until the degree is earned
  • Meet with a Financial Aid counselor in the Spring of each academic year to review packaging and create financial plan through the earning of your undergraduate degree
  • Ensure that you are meeting SAP for each academic year until degree completion
  • Meet the priority FAFSA and HESSA submission deadlines for the university

Students in the RUN Rising program may qualify for either RUN to TOP or Garden State Guarantee

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY AND INCOME REQUIREMENTS:

All qualified undergraduate students must be an admitted, enrolled, and matriculated student at Rutgers University–Newark seeking the completion of their first bachelor’s degree. Eligible students must legally qualify for in-state tuition. Only in-state tuition and mandatory fees will be calculated into the RU-N to the TOP and the Garden State Gurantee Programs.  Eligible students must qualify for in-state tuition and meet the following student, citizenship, and household income requirements:

Student Requirement

  1. A resident of New Jersey legally qualifying for in-state tuition 
  2. Admitted, enrolled and matriculated student for fall 2022 and beyond

Citizenship Requirements

  1. Be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National; or
  2. Be a U.S. permanent resident who has an I-151, I-551, or I-551c (Alien Registration Receipt Card); or
  3. Be a recipient of New Jersey S2479 (the Tuition Equality Act/NJ Dream Act)
  4. Legally eligible for in-state tuition rate

Adjusted Gross Income Requirements

Students must have a household adjusted gross income (AGI) as laid out in the table below:

A student’s AGI for scholarship consideration is determined by the completion of the FAFSA or NJ Alternative Application. The income responses will be evaluated based on the AGI table above.

Consideration for the RUN Rising scholarship requires the submission of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The Rutgers University Federal school code is 002629.

Applying for Financial Aid- NJ Alternative Financial Aid Application

The New Jersey Alternative Financial Aid Application is ONLY for undocumented/DACA students. U.S. Citizens and U.S. permanent residents must complete the FAFSA.  Students can access and complete the New Jersey Alternative Application Financial Aid Application located on the HESAA website.

A student must meet ALL of these requirements for New Jersey state aid consideration:

  1. Attended a New Jersey high school for at least three (3) years and
  2. Graduated from a New Jersey high school or received the equivalent of a high school diploma in New Jersey and
  3. Registered for Selective Service (male students only) and
  4. Demonstrate financial need and
  5. Be a resident of New Jersey for at least 12 consecutive months immediately prior to enrollment and
  6. Be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in an approved degree or certificate program
  7. Complete The Rutgers University Tuition Equality Act Application and Affidavit (Rutgers requirement only)

Please take notice – the New Jersey Alternative Financial Aid Application is a confidential application that is used solely by the New Jersey Higher Education Student Assistance Authority (HESAA) to qualify students for state financial aid. It is not used for federal financial aid purposes. Information that is shared with HESAA via this application is used only by HESAA and partner colleges, universities, and other state agencies in order to administer grants and scholarships. HESAA will do everything within its authority and jurisdiction to protect the ongoing confidentiality of this information.
