Disability Services

In This Section

The Office of Disability Services (ODS) views disabilities as an essential piece of the diverse community that makes up Rutgers University-Newark. We work in partnership with the university community to create an inclusive educational environment while also serving as a resource for students with disabilities.

ODS works to accomplish access and inclusion by working to minimize or remove barriers so a student can experience everything Rutgers University-Newark has to offer.

ODS is responsible for determining the accommodations needed for a student to have access to the Rutgers University-Newark environment.  Students interested in learning more or initiating the process should click the link below.

Still have questions about disability services?

I don't know if I have a disability, how else might I know if I should use ODS?

Unsure if our office might be relevant for you? Consider the following:

  • Are you a student who has used accommodations in the past, such as extended time on tests, notes from your teachers, small group classes, extensions on deadlines, or the opportunity to take your tests with fewer classmates?
  • Have you been diagnosed with a medical condition that has an impact on your ability to be a student?
  • Have you had an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), 504 Plan, or previously received special education services in elementary, middle or high school?
  • Do you think you might have a disability and have questions about how you might get a diagnosis?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions, you should sit down with one of our staff members so we can have a conversation about what is possible for you.

What is the first step?

The first step is to fill out the ODS registration form. This form will let us know what your questions are and allow us to connect you with the individual best suited to assist you.

We will not know you are here unless you talk with us. Filling out the form and coming in for a meeting does not mean you must use accommodations.

We will reach out to set up an appointment once the completed form is received.

What is needed to get accommodations?

We use documentation from a medical professional combined with our observations and the personal narrative of each student to determine appropriate accommodations.

Please take a moment to review the guidelines posted on the website below. Do not let questions or the lack of documentation stop you from reaching out. We have resources that can assist students in obtaining documentation.

Guidelines on the Office of Disability Services website.

Will using accommodations mean I graduate with a different degree?

No, absolutely not. Students with disabilities graduate with the same degree as students who do not have a disability.

Does ODS go beyond just accommodations in the classroom?

Being a student at Rutgers University-Newark is more than your time in the classroom.

Most experiences take place outside the classroom in the dining halls, the residence halls, sporting events, during activities, with the people you meet, or around the campus.

The memories you make, ideas you are exposed to, challenges you overcome, activities you participate in, skills you acquire, people you meet, friends you make, hobbies you develop, are all part of the student experience at Rutgers-Newark. We are committed to ensuring that every student, regardless of ability, has these opportunities.

Disability Services is not special education. You, the student, drive this process. Nothing will happen without you. You have every right to decide if you use accommodations. Our staff includes people with disabilities and understand the concerns that people can have about coming to our office. We encourage you to meet with us so we can answer any questions or concerns that you have before making a decision.
