NetID
The university uses NetID and a secure password as a sign-on identifier instead of the student ID number. Students, faculty, and staff use NetID to log in to the following web systems:
- PAC change (students)
- Address update (students)
- Transcripts and grades (student and faculty/staff views)
- Class rosters (faculty and staff views)
- Dean's view
Your NetID is the prefix before the @ in the rutgers.edu email address. You can also find your NetID at identityservices.rutgers.edu/netidquery.
Connect to your Scarletmail
After setting up your Net ID, you can connect to your ScarletMail. Below you will find many ways to get your email(s) connected:

Policy on Name Changes on Student Records
Student records are maintained in the name you provided on your Application for Admission form. In the interest of accuracy, validity, and legality, all official records compiled at the university must be consistent, and that includes your name.
For example, if you used a shortened version of your legal name (such as Sue for Susan or Tom for Thomas) in your initial application, or, if you did not include a middle initial and you would like your legal name printed on your diploma, you must complete an online Change/Correction of Name application before applying for graduation.
Submit Chosen/Preferred Name
Policy on Chosen/Preferred Name Submissions
Rutgers University recognizes that members of the university community use names other than their legal names. The university seeks to promote the comfort and safety of students, staff, or faculty members who wish to be identified by a name other than their legal name by instituting a chosen/preferred name procedure.
You, as the student, can determine the chosen/preferred first name that you want to be known by within Rutgers’ systems. However, inappropriate use of the chosen/preferred name policy (including but not limited to avoiding a legal obligation or misrepresentation) may be cause for denying the request.
Examples of when students might elect to use a chosen or preferred name include:
- You have chosen a name that reflects your gender identity.
- You are an international student who prefers to use a specific name while studying in the United States
- You prefer to be called by a nickname instead of your legal name (e.g., “Jackie” instead of “Jacqueline”)
