Undergraduate students may calculate their own cumulative GPA by using a specific formula.
How to Calculate Your Cumulative GPA
In This Section
If you are an undergraduate, you can compute your cumulative grade point average (GPA) by multiplying the grade you received in each course taken for credit (and to be included in the average) by the number of credits you earned in the course.
Grade (Numerical Equivalent) x Credits = Grade Points
Add up your grade points for each class. Then divide the sum by the total number of credits earned in those courses.
Total Grade Points / Total Credits = Cumulative Grade Point Average
Here are the grade points assigned for grades A through F:
Grades | Definitions | Numerical Equivalent |
A | Outstanding | 4.0 |
B+ | 3.5 | |
B | Good | 3.0 |
C+ | 2.5 | |
C | Satisfactory | 2.0 |
D | Poor | 1.0 |
F | Failure | 0.0 |
Try It Yourself
Imagine that you took four classes, each one counting for three credits, and received two A's and two B's.
To calculate your GPA, multiply the grade points by the credits:
4 grade points X 3 credits = 12
4 grade points X 3 credits = 12
3 grade points X 3 credits = 9
3 grade points X 3 credits = 9
Add up your grade points. In this case, it would be 42.
Then divide 42 by the total number of credits you took, which is 12.
42 / 12 = 3.5
Therefore, 3.5 would be your GPA.
Note: Rutgers University–Newark Undergraduate does not give out "minus" grades (such as "A-" or "B-"). Grades earned at institutions other than Rutgers and the New Jersey Institute of Technology are not calculated into the cumulative grade point average.
