Merit-Based (Admission)

First-Year: The Chancellor’s Scholarship is awarded to admitted first-year students for four years of undergraduate study for a total of up to $20,000. The annual amount is up to $5,000. Awards are based on academic ability; an assessment of talents, experience, and potential; and a holistic review of how a student might contribute to a diverse educational environment. 

Transfer: The Chancellor’s Scholarship is awarded to admitted transfer students for two years of undergraduate study for a total of up to $10,000. The annual amount is up to $5,000. Awards are based on academic ability; an assessment of talents, experience, and potential; and a holistic review of how a student might contribute to a diverse educational environment.

A minimum of one Chancellor’s Scholarship will be awarded annually in the fall semester to an admitted transfer student from each of the following institutions Bergen County College, Essex County College, Hudson County College, Middlesex County College, Passaic Community College, and Union County College.

In order to be eligible for the Chancellor’s Scholarship, a student must be in one of the following categories:

• U.S. Citizen or U.S. National
• U.S. permanent resident who has an I-151, I-551, or I-551c (Alien Registration Receipt Card)
• Recipients of New Jersey S2479 (the “Dream Act”) and/or Federal Deferred Action to Childhood Arrival (DACA)

Renewal eligibility: 

• Enrolled at least 15 degree credits per semester, and complete 30 degree credits with a grade point average of 3.0 or better in each year of enrollment

The Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Scholarship is awarded to transfer applicants attending community college and are members of the college’s PTK Honor Society. There are 20 PTK scholarships awarded annually in the fall; a minimum of one PTK Scholarship will be awarded annually to an admitted transfer student from each of the following institutions Bergen County College, Essex County College, Hudson County College, Middlesex County College, Passaic Community College, and Union County College. PTK Scholarships are awarded for two years of undergraduate study for a total of $16,000. The annual amount is $8,000.

To be considered:

• Transfer applicants must apply by February 1 for fall admission
• Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents
• Students must be enrolled full-time in a transfer program at a community college
• Students must be a member of their community college’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society
• Students must have earned an associate’s degree in arts or science by the time of enrollment and have a minimum grade point average of 3.8 for consideration
• Students must enroll directly from the associate degree-granting community college, with no intervening enrollment at another institution

Renewal eligibility: 

• Enrolled for at least 15 degree credits per semester, and complete 30 degree credits with a grade point average of 3.0 or better in each year of enrollment
• Your scholarship offer is contingent upon providing proof of your Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society membership and your successful completion of the requirements for the Associate in Arts or the Associate in Science degree by the start of your intended term of entry
• Merit scholarships are renewable for four semesters for transfer students provided you are continuously enrolled at Rutgers University—Newark.

The Carr Scholarship honors the first African-American Rutgers graduate. This scholarship reflects our commitment to enrolling a student body that is broadly diverse in terms of experience, socioeconomic background, geography, special skills, and talents. The Carr Scholarship is awarded to first-year applicants for four years of undergraduate study for a total of $40,000. The annual amount is $10,000.

To be considered:

• U.S. Citizen or U.S. National
• U.S. permanent resident who has an I-151, I-551, or I-551c (Alien Registration Receipt Card)
• Students must have competitive academic credentials, specialized talents, extracurricular activities, leadership, community service, work experience, awards, honors, and achievement

Renewal eligibility: 

• Enrolled for at least 15 degree credits per semester, and complete 30 degree credits with a grade point average of 3.0 or better in each year of enrollment

The BA/MD Presidential Scholarship reflects our commitment to supporting students who have been accepted into the highly competitive and rigorous 7-year BA/MD program with the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS).  Students complete three years of undergraduate coursework within the School of Arts & Sciences-Newark, and enroll at NJMS in their 4th year.  The Presidential Scholarship covers the in-state cost of tuition, room and board annually during the three years of undergraduate coursework.  

Scholarship does not follow the student once they enroll at the medical school.

• U.S. permanent resident who has an I-151, I-551, or I-551c (Alien Registration Receipt Card)
• Student must have been accepted into the 7-year BA/MD Program with the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School upon their initial admission into the School of Arts & Sciences-Newark
• Student is expected to live on campus

Renewal eligibility: 

• Enrolled for at least 14 degree credits per semester, and complete 28 degree credits with a grade point average of 3.4 or better in each year of enrollment
