Where and When Grades Are Available
You may find out your grades for a given semester or session within 48 hours at the end of the exam period. Go to the Student Unofficial Transcript and Grades site, and log in with a valid NetID and password.
If your grades are not available online within 48 hours, check with your instructor.
We will not give out grades over the phone, via email, or via fax because they are considered sensitive information.
Term Grade Report
If you need a hard-copy grade report for employment reimbursement or any other reason, you can also request a single-semester term grade report. We'll send the report to the address you provide, or you can pick up the form in person at the Office of the Registrar:

You can order a term grade report within one academic year after you complete the course. If you need an individual semester grade report that is more than one year old, you must order a transcript.
Understanding Your Grades
Both your term and cumulative grade point average (GPA) are on your unofficial transcript. If you would like to predict your cumulative GPA at the end of the term, learn how to calculate your GPA.

Grades, Definitions, and Numerical Equivalents
Undergraduate courses are graded based on the scale below:

Note: Rutgers University–Newark Undergraduate Schools do not give out "minus" grades (such as "A-" or "B-"). A grade of C or better is usually required for Major or Minor courses, while General Requirement courses must be passed with a D or better.

Grade Symbols and Definitions
Other grade symbols and credit prefixes that you might see on a transcript:
Given only when you take a course on a noncredit basis. Courses graded S/U do not count toward your total number of credits for graduation and do not affect your grade point average (GPA), but count as credits attempted for purposes of determining your full-time/part-time status or for financial aid.
A nonnumerical grade of PA/NC is assigned only if you are a regularly enrolled student who has registered for an undergraduate course on a Pass/Fail basis when such registration meets the school's regulations. PA (Pass) is the same as an A, B, or C, while NC (No credit) is the same as a D or F.
May be used by the instructor if you cannot meet the course requirements. The instructor must submit an Electronic Change of Grade to change the IN to an appropriate letter grade.
An incomplete grade will become an F if you don't meet the course requirements by these semester deadlines:
Fall: February 1
Winter: February 15
Spring: June 1
Summer: September 15
Note: A graduate incomplete grade does not become an F.
The Office of the Registrar assigns the NG grade if your instructor leaves the grade blank or if a computer entry error has credited a blank grade. If you have an NG grade and you do not clear up the registration problem within the next semester, the NG grade will become an F, and your cumulative grade point average will be recalculated accordingly.
Grades of TB+, TB, TC+, TC, TD, and TF are used for all incomplete and temporary grades. Instructors give temporary grades when you do not finish your coursework requirements, such as major assignments or examinations. The letter following the T represents the grade the instructor would give you if you did not finish your outstanding work. This temporary grade becomes permanent if you do not finish your work as required and your instructor does not change the temporary grade to a permanent one. The permanent grade may not be worse than the assigned letter grade.
A T grade will become permanent if you don't finish your coursework by these semester deadlines:
Fall: The end of the sixth week of the spring semester
Spring and Summer Session: October 15
October Graduates: September 15
Note: It is up to an individual faculty member and/or the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs to set earlier deadlines and internal procedures for completing your work. It is also your responsibility to contact your instructor for an interpretation of the T grade and to establish a plan to complete your work.
A TT grade is used in the honors program instead of first-semester course grades. The grade may be raised or lowered when you present the research thesis or honors project at the end of the second semester.
If a faculty member must submit a final course grade before an allegation of a violation of academic integrity is resolved, you will receive a temporary grade of TZ, which does not affect your GPA until the adjudication process is completed. A faculty member can also assign a TZ grade if you cannot complete coursework due to a certifiable emergency. The TZ will convert to an F if you do not complete the work by the end of the following semester.
Instructors use this grade only when they cannot assign a grade better than D and consider your final examination grade to be dramatically inconsistent enough with your previous work to merit another examination. The instructor should arrange a re-examination with you, and the instructor must then process a change of grade.
An RD will become a D and an RF will become an F unless the instructor submits a change of grade by the following semester deadlines:
Fall and Winter: February 1
Spring: June 1
Summer: September 15
Assigned only when the instructor believes you might have passed the course if you had taken the final examination. You must arrange with the instructor to take the deferred examination within two weeks after the beginning of the spring semester for fall classes and within two weeks after the close of the spring semester for spring classes.
An XF grade may be imposed by an Academic Integrity Facilitator, University Hearing Board, or Student Conduct Officer as part of the sanction for a separable violation of academic integrity. You must request removal of the X from an XF grade in writing to the appropriate Campus Appeals Committee. A panel of two student members and one faculty member of the appeals committee will consider your request. Such requests will not be considered until at least 18 months from the time of the violation that resulted in the XF. Additional explanatory material on the procedures for the removal of the X from an XF grade may be found on the Student Conduct website.
Indicates you have officially withdrawn from class(es). If you stopped attending a class, the professor should assign a grade of TZ.
Credit Prefixes Before Course Credits
These are shown before a course credit.
No credit earned toward the degree and no grade computed in the cumulative grade point average.
Credits are earned toward the degree, but the grade is not computed in the cumulative grade point average.
Credits are not earned toward the degree, but the grade is computed in the cumulative grade point average.
No credit earned toward the degree, no grade computed in the cumulative grade-point average, no final exam taken, and the receipt of a grade of S or U.
A course taken on a Pass/No Credit basis.
The course has been repeated, and the original grade was a D or an F.
Still have questions about Grades?
You may only register for Pass/No Credit for elective courses before the start of the semester, with the dean's written approval. Once you have the approval, you must bring it to the Office of the Registrar or scan the approval form and mail it to regsr@newark.rutgers.edu , to apply the P/NC option to the specified course.
Term grades do not appear on transcripts for several reasons.
- The instructor has not yet submitted the grades online or to the Office of the Registrar.
- The instructor submitted the roster with grades, but you were not given a grade.
You must contact your instructor if your grades were not submitted to the Office of the Registrar.
After the instructor submits the change of grade request online, it must be approved by the department chair, which must then be approved by the dean. Therefore the process could take several days belore the new grade is posted to your official transcript.

Once the Dean of your school approves your new grade, it will be posted as part of your record.
Please contact your instructor to find out the status of any change of grade requests that you may have requested.
Your incomplete grade will become an F.
