In order to study in the U.S. in student visa status, international students are required to document financial resources adequate to meet the full costs of educational and living expenses for themselves and, if applicable, dependents. To obtain Certificates of Eligibility for Non-immigrant Status (Form I-20 for F-1 student visa and DS-2019 for J-1 exchange visitor visa), students must provide financial documentation certifying available funds for the first full year of study in the minimum amounts specified below as required for current academic year (amounts may vary and are subject to increase). Add $5000 for spouse and $3750 for each child if dependents are coming in F-2 or J-2 status. Students should understand clearly that it is the students' own responsibility to obtain sufficient funding to cover tuition, fees, health insurance and personal expenses for their education at Rutgers University Newark, even future years' funding is not required for visa purpose!
If funding is provided by a sponsor other than Rutgers University or the student, the sponsor’s relationship to the student must be identified and the sponsor’s intent to support the student must be expressed in writing. The document must be issued no more than 9 months prior to program start date. For students beginning in the Fall (September) semester, any bank statement issued before January 1 is not acceptable.
Financial documentation can be in the form of bank statement, offer letter for scholarship, teaching assistantship, graduate assistantship, fellowship or employment. Scanned copy is acceptable, but it must be on official letterhead or business form. It must be in English or accompanied by certified English translation. Bank statement must be for a checking, savings or time deposit account. Brokerage, stock or equities funds, real estate and/or any non-liquid assets may not be included.
Costs vary depending on academic levels and programs. You must refer back to your admissions counselors to receive the most recent I-20 financial application forms.
