Rutgers University–Newark's Winter Session starts Monday, December 23, 2019, and ends on January 17, 2020. 

The University will be closed during the Holiday Break (December 25, 2019 - January 1, 2020) and no face-to-face course meetings will be held during this time. All courses will have directed readings, online, and/or web-enhanced coursework during this break. Please consult the course syllabus for specific assignments. All important sessions dates including course make-up dates in the event of an official campus closing due to inclement weather can be viewed on

Winter Session courses are open to:
  • Current and past Rutgers University students
  • Visiting students from other colleges and universities
  • High school and pre-college students
  • Adults interested in personal enrichment, professional development, or degree completion opportunities
Attending a winter course allows you to:
  • Accelerate time to graduation
  • Complete a major or minor prerequisite
  • Reduce coursework during the next semester
  • Explore a subject of interest

Registration begins Monday, October 7.

Visiting (Non-Rutgers) Students

Visiting students that want to experience a Rutgers Winter Session do not need to go through Admissions in order to attend Winter Session. Visiting students can submit a registration inquiry on the Summer & Winter Sessions Application Portal. If you are new to Rutgers, please click Get Started to create an account within the portal. Once your account is created, please complete and submit the Winter Session 2020 Visiting Student Registration Form (VSRF). In 2-3 business days, students will receive an email with registration instructions. 

Transfer students admitted for Spring 2020 must submit a Visiting Student Registration Form (VSRF) through the Summer & Winter Sessions Application Portal in order to register for Winter Session 2020.

High School Students

Academically qualified high school students can submit an application to take a Winter Session at Rutgers University in Newark. High school students completing grades 9, 10, or 11 by June 2020 can complete and submit a High School Student Application in the Summer & Winter Sessions Application Portal. Students new to Rutgers must click Get Started to create an account within the portal. Once your account is created, please complete the High School Student Application. Please upload a copy of your high school transcript and/or letter of recommendation from a guidance counselor, instructor, advisor, or faculty member.

Rutgers University–Newark's Winter  Session is open to current Rutgers students, visiting students from other colleges and universities, transfer students, pre-college students, adults interested in personal enrichment, professional development, or degree completion options; and all members of the community. Current Rutgers students can register via WebReg. Visiting students must first submit a Visiting Student Registration Form (VSRF) in the Summer & Winter Sessions Application Portal to begin the process that will grant you visiting student access to Rutgers registration systems.

If you are a first-time visiting student (non-Rutgers) or have not attended a class within the last year, you must first complete and submit the Visiting Student Registration Inquiry Form through the Office of Summer & Winter Sessions Application Portal. Once processed, you will receive registration instructions and information on how to access WebReg.

How many credits can I register for during the winter?

You are permitted to take up to 4 credits during the Winter Session. To request an academic credit overload (permission to take 5 credits or more), you must seek permission from the appropriate administrator or department.

Visiting (non-Rutgers) students must submit a request for an academic credit overload to the Office of Summer and Winter Sessions.

If you are a Rutgers student, you must submit a request to a representative in your homeschool. Please contact your academic advisor at your school listed below.

How do I get my grades at the end of the session?

Once your grade(s) have been submitted to the Office of the Registrar, you will be able to access them by requesting an unofficial or offical transcript. Login using your NetID and password. Look up your NetID.

Can I audit a course?
Back to Top

Only non-Rutgers students may audit a Winter Session course. The audit option must be selected at the time of registration. Standard tuition fees apply. You are expected to complete all coursework, except the final exams, and you will be assigned a grade of S or U. The course and grade will appear on your transcript.
